Where Parents Have Worked:

Where Parents Have Worked If you follow the system as it is outlined here, you can be sure of profits. We worked in Santa Monica and Los Angeles, the most over-photographed area in the world, and since the system worked successfully there it should work anywhere parents have worked. There are more photographers, offering more for the customer's money, in the Los Angeles area than anywhere parents have worked else on the face of the globe. Parents are flooded with offers of all kinds, up to and including promises that the baby will have a chance to get into the movies through an arrangement where parents have workedby talent scouts review the pictures which are taken. In our test, we didn't offer the parents anything but good pictures at an extremely low price and this is all that parents wanted. We had a standard take-it-or-leave-it offer which looked too good to be true to most parents. We offered ten 8 x 10 prints, all of them different poses, for $10. Reorders were sold at $2 per print.

This teacher asked parents to take most of the responsibility for teaching the sight vocabulary, while he himself taught the spelling patterns. Parents were given advice and materials to provide and play reading games with their children. This method worked extremely well. It was noticeable, though, that where parents have worked parents did not attend the supporting reading-workshop session, much less progress was made. This reinforces our view that regular contact between parents and teachers is essential if a PACT scheme is to flourish.

Pitfield Project provided us with a matrix in which to operate in schools and to be in close touch with parents, teachers and children. We searched for farther evidence and talked with interested people, finally presenting a selected junior school with the evidence we had accumulated and with the suggestion that they themselves might organize co-operation with parents to benefit the children's reading. The school took up the idea; they worked hard and magnificently to produce a scheme which had 98 per cent of parents co-operating within the first two terms of the scheme's operation.
