When Activities In Hive:

When Activities In Hive Use observation-type commercial beehive, which can be purchased from the same firms that provide other beekeepers' supplies. The distinguishing feature of these hives is that they have glass sides to permit observation of the bees' activities. As bees fly out from hive on a line with the hive—a "beeline"—hive used in schoolroom should be placed at a window above the ground floor, so as to avoid interference with children in schoolyard. When too much light enters hive, bees cover glass with wax, preventing observation of their activities. To avoid this, keep glass sides and end of hive covered at all times except when bees are being observed.

Smallest bees in the hive; are undeveloped females; legs have special structures to carry pollen and cut wax; mouthparts are constructed to obtain nectar and to mold wax; stings are short, curved, and barbed, and are used in defense of hive; when sting is used, the worker bee loses its life; life span varies with seasons of the year; in spring, when there is great activity in hive, worker lives only . about 6 weeks; in fall, when activities in hive are more or less dormant, lives through entire winter season

A hive of bees is one of the simplest habitats to establish and maintain, especially for a schoolroom. The essential requirement is to obtain the correct type of demonstration hive. The hive should be constructed on the plans of a commercial hive since this type is the most easily maintained.
