The Milk Is Factory-processed: Situated in the below-sea-level polder lands, Gouda is a center of agriculture, mostly dairy farming on the rich grassland; the milk is factory-processed to make Gouda cheese. Other industries include the manufacture of agricultural implements, bricks, tiles, and drainpipes. The nourishing Textile industry of the 14th and 15th centuries has long since disappeared.
The town was founded in the 12th century and received its charter in 1272.
Cream cheese differs slightly in that it is rarely ripened. A "home-made" cream cheese is made by allowing milk to sour naturally, adding rennet (a solution containing rennin) and hanging the curds up in muslin to drain. The cheese can be eaten 24 hours later. Processed cheese is a factory-made product in which the cheese is sterilized rather than matured. When tinned or vacuum packed it can be stored indefinitely.
In 1728 Swedish botanist Karl Linnaeus classified the cacao plant as the 'food of the sods'. made from varying mixtures of cream and milk, sweeteners, flavourings and air; it was popularised in Italy. The first ice cream factory was built (1851) by Baltimore milk dealer Jacob Fussell. |
