Thatcher Family In 1703: The town was one of those raided by the Indian chief. King Philip, son of Massasoit, in his war with the colonists (1675). His council lodge occupied a field now within the town. Still standing is the first frame house in the community, built by the Thatcher family in 1703 as quarters for the slaves who cut the logs for their sawmill. The town was settled in 1673. Originally a part of Abington, it was incorporated as a separate town in 1874. Pop. 13,119.
WILLIAM RANDOLPH: b. Warwickshire, England, c. 1651; d. Henrico County, Va, April 11, 1711. A member of a family of English landed gentry with mercantile connections, he migrated to Virginia, where he succeeded an uncle as clerk of Henrico County in 1673. Combining public service with diligent effort as a merchant-planter, he quickly amassed a fortune and the extensive

He held several county offices, was a burgess for Henrico in the General Assembly from 1685 to 1699 and from 1703 to 1710, and acted as speaker of the House of Burgesses in 1696 and 1698 and clerk of the House from 1699 to 1702. Although without legal training, he also served as the colony's attorney general (1694-1698).
