Supporting Parents To Rediscover: The government is advocating employment for young mothers (though we hope there will be choice in this and greater, good quality, childcare support for those who decide it is appropriate for chem). Schools can have a part to play in this aspect of life-long learning, encouraging and supporting parents to rediscover their skills and play an important part in their communities.
This teacher asked parents to take most of the responsibility for teaching the sight vocabulary, while he himself taught the spelling patterns. Parents were given advice and materials to provide and play reading games with their children. This method worked extremely well. It was noticeable, though, that where parents did not attend the supporting reading-workshop session, much less progress was made. This reinforces our view that regular contact between parents and teachers is essential if a PACT scheme is to flourish.
The growing middle-class aped their betters and perpetuated the system, supporting the schools which provided their sons with entry into the promised land. Parents loomed large in the reality of many children's and young people's lives. Not respecting their authority threatened a future of poverty and alienation, witnessed in the miserable lives of many around them (from whom their own wealth often sprung) and mirrored in the stories of the time. Anthony Trollope's long saga, The Way We Live Now (1875), underlines the machinations of parents desperate to maintain and improve their wealth or social standing using their children as collateral and fully prepared to bludgeon them into acceptance. |
