Studying Medicine In London QUAIN, Richard, British surgeon, brother of Jones Quain (q.v.) : b. Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland, July 1800; d. London, England, Sept. 15, 1887. After studying medicine in London and in Paris, he taught in University College, London, from 1828 to 1866, acting as professor of descriptive anatomy (1832-1850) and as professor of clinical surgery in the hospital (1848-1866). One of the first fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1843, Quain was its president in 1868.

QUAIN, SIR Richard, British physician, cousin of Jones and Richard Quain (qq.v.) : b. Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, Oct. 30, 1816; d. London, England, March 13, 1898. He studied medicine in University College, London, whence he was graduated in 1840. He was elected a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1846 and he was president of the General Medical Council from 1891 (when he was created a baronet) until his death. His practice in London was large and lucrative and besides publishing several medical treatises he edited a well-known Dictionary of Medicine (1882; 3d ed., 1902).


In 1944 they identified americium (95) and curium (96) ; in 1949, berkelium (97) and californium (98) ; in 1952, einsteinium (99) ; in 1953, fermium (100) ; in 1955, mendelevium (101); and in 1958, nobelium (102). Seaborg and his group recognized that the newly discovered family of transuranium elements resembled the rare-earth family in that both sets of elements added electrons to inner atomic orbits to increase their atomic numbers. They identified these two sets as actinides and lanthanides (qq.v.). SEABURY, se'ber-e, Samuel, Arm clergyman: b. North Groton, Conn., No^ 1729; d. New London, Conn., Feb. 25, 1796 was graduated from Yale College in 1748 three years later took a course in medicine £ University of Edinburgh. He did not, how practice medicine, but began studying the instead. Ordained in the Church of Englai 1753, he returned to America in 1754 and be rector of Christ Church, New Brunswick, In 1757 he received the pastorate of ( Church, Jamaica, L.I., and in 1766, of St. Pe Westchester, N.Y.
