Stinkbug Family: The harlequin bug is about % of an inch (1 cm) long and has a broad, flattened, oval-elongate body with a large triangular shield, the scutellum, extending back over two thirds of the abdomen. The sucking mouthparts of the adults and nymphs cause severe damage to the plants on which they feed. As is the case with other members of the stinkbug family (Penta-tomidae), the harlequin bug has an abdominal gland that secretes an offensive substance when the insect is attacked.
