Stimulated The Growth Of Virginia After his appointment to the United States Senate in 1933, Byrd remained the state political leader. During the depression Virginians applauded monetary and banking reforms and shared in a number of economic recovery programs, but they generally disapproved of New Deal programs. Nonetheless, the expansion of federal agencies made government service the state's leading income source after 1932. World War II stimulated the growth of Virginia even more than had the previous war.

Highways.—Virginia has developed an extensive highway system of about 50,000 miles of surfaced roads, including 1,100 miles of interstate highway, which has stimulated economic diversification. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, completed in 1964, is typical of Virginia's progress in linking all parts of the state by improved highways. The 17-mile-long structure, including 12 miles of trestled roadway and two deep tunnels, connects the state's eastern shore to the mainland. Airlines.—Fifteen of Virginia's major cities are served by airlines. In 1967 there were 37 municipal and 71 private airfields in the state.
