State Health Departments In addition, they provide educational services for the public and research programs to assist in maintaining the health of the individuals within that state. The state health departments furnish laboratory facilities for research on and control of diseases. They also maintain records of vital statistics.Health departments may also exist in some counties and cities. Each is supported by taxes and concerns itself with the needs of the people within its jurisdiction.

The official agencies, like the voluntary groups, provide research and educational services. In addition, some official agencies set standards that assist in protecting the health of the public and the consumers of health products and services. Each state has a tax-supported official agency known as the state health department. These departments are responsible for establishing and enforcing health laws for their states.


Some states were attempting to organize the administration of their public health facilities by merging departments. New Mexico and Nevada followed the example of California, Maine, Missouri, and New Hampshire and combined their health and welfare departments. The commission studying the public health needs of New York City recommended a single health services administration for the city and the creation of a nonprofit corporation to operate city hospitals and health centers.
