Small City: GOTEBORG, yu-ta-bor'ys, is the principal seaport and second-largest city of Sweden. It is situated on the west coast of the country, where the Gota River flows into the Kattegat. The city sprawls over a series of low, rocky hills, and its seaward approaches are dotted with small city islands and rocky reefs.
HAZEL PARK is a city in southeastern Michigan, in Oakland county, on the northern border of Detroit, of which it is a residential suburb. It has a number of small city industries and a race track. Hazel Park was incorporated in 1942. Government is by city manager and council. Population: 25,631.
The fact that the Greek city states developed on the basis of an unfree population sharpened the conflict among the various factions of the small city citizen body, especially between the aristocratic and democratic groups, and added internal to national disunity'. Violent competition for the hegemony of Greece and for power within the city state led to constant warfare, until the Greek city states succumbed to the Macedonian conquerors (338 B.C.). The weak remnants of local independence granted by the Macedonian kings were finally lost when the Romans defeated the last alliance of Greek states in 146 B.C. |
