Significant Activities In Science:

Significant Activities In Science The most significant activities in science education during the past year involved the continuing efforts of scientists and science educators throughout the world to share their particular work and accomplishments with others. Over 180 science and mathematics education projects described in the 1967 and 1968 annual reports of the International Clearinghouse on Science and Mathematics Curricular Developments, a joint activity of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the University of Maryland's Science Teaching Center, indicate the extent of this cooperation.

The story was told in money and manpower. In 1953 the United States invested approximately $5.5 billion in scientific research and development activities; in 1968, according to a projection by the National Science Foundation, the figure would be close to $25 billion. While the U.S. gross national product was growing at an annual rate of 5.3%, the national investment in research and development activities was growing at 12% per year. During the same period the proportion of the work force engaged in science and engineering also doubled.

Because the reviews are interpretive rather than documentary, they help the reader learn which of the many achievements in a particular field were most significant to an authority in that field. Occasionally a particularly significant development is highlighted as a "Breakthrough" on a special page. A brief addendum at the end of each review describes other events and activities in the discipline, but without the interpretive comments of the reviewer.
