Relief Activities Overseas: Canteens served soldiers at camps, stopover points, ports of embarkation, and overseas. Ambulance sections were staffed and supplied for the Army, nurses recruited, and base hospital units organized. Extensive civilian relief activities overseas cared for thousands of refugees and ill persons. In late 1917 educators asked the Red Cross for a program through which the nation's youth could make its contribution to the war effort; the result was the American Junior Red Cross, founded by the proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson.
