Relief Activities Overseas Canteens served soldiers at camps, stopover points, ports of embarkation, and overseas. Ambulance sections were staffed and supplied for the Army, nurses recruited, and base hospital units organized. Extensive civilian relief activities overseas cared for thousands of refugees and ill persons. In late 1917 educators asked the Red Cross for a program through which the nation's youth could make its contribution to the war effort; the result was the American Junior Red Cross, founded by the proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson.

In painting, the term refers to the appearance of projection and solidity in represented objects. In physical geography, relief is the term applied to undulations or surface elevations of the terrain. In sculpture, it is the projection of a figure from the plane surface to which the figure is attached. According to the degree of prominence, it is known as high relief or alto-relievo, half relief or mezzo-relievo, and low relief (bas-relief or basso-relievo).


Sculpture, both large and small, may be ii the round, made to stand free and be observe from all sides, or it may be in relief, that ii to say, either attached to a background or madf to be placed against a background. Most sculpture in the round proportionally reproduces the full roundness of the object represented, while sculpture in relief may vary from full roundness (high relief, alto rilievo), to a much flattened representation ' (low relief, bas-relief, basso rilievo).
