Mathematics And Medicine At Cambridge RECORDE, rek'ord, Robert, English math-ematican: b. Tenby, Pembroke, about 1510; d. London, 1558. He studied at Oxford, was elected to a fellowship of All Souls' in 1531, studied, and probably taught, mathematics and medicine at Cambridge, and later was instructor in a variety of subjects at Oxford. Having gone to London, he became, it is said, physician to Edward VI and Queen Mary. In 1551 he was made general surveyor of the mines and money; but despite this post seems to have been imprisoned for debt in King's Bench prison, where he certainly died.

Hardy was born in Cranleigh, Surrey, on Feb. 7, 1877. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1910 and was Sadleirian professor of pure mathematics at Cambridge from 1931 to 1942. He enjoyed writing and published over 11 books. His Collected Mathematical Papers comprising 7 volumes were published starting in 1966. He wrote one popular book, A Mathematician's Apology (1940). His main interest outside mathematics was cricket. Hardy died in Cambridge on Dec. 1, 1947.
