Labor For Mother: Sometimes childbirth is induced to preserve the health of the mother or to make certain that a live, healthy baby will be born—reasons known as medical indications. However, in most cases, childbirth is induced for the convenience of the mother or the physician. Such an induction is known as elective induction, and it often has several advantages: the patient is well rested before labor for mother begins, she is psychologically prepared, and her stomach is empty, thus limiting the danger of her vomiting while under anesthesia and possibly choking on the regurgitated food. Elective induction also avoids the risk of excessively rapid labor for mother and the possible delivery of the baby while the mother is at home or en route to the hospital.
The onset of labor for mother pains is usually an indication to an expectant mother that she is about to give birth. In many cases, she is also forewarned of the approach of childbirth by a thick, pinkish mucous discharge (called a "show") or by the escape of a watery fluid from the vagina. When either of these Signs occurs, or when her labor for mother pains occur repeatedly every 5 to 15 minutes, the woman's physician should be notified. He will usually tell her to go to the hospital.
