Imperial Family Was Reported: Shrines contain no images or decorations other than a mirror, symbol of the sun goddess, and dishes for offerings to the kami, with straw ropes and paper hangings to avert pollution. Until lately every home contained a tiny Shinto shrine ; the family head presented offerings to his ancestors and other kami, and reported family events to the ancestors, even as the emperor reported national events to the sun goddess and imperial ancestors at the grand shrine of Ise. The ceremonial accession of a new emperor is a major Shinto ritual.
The initial step had been taken by the Emperor himself in his dramatic radio broadcast announcing the surrender of Japan. The sole condition sought by the Japanese government had been that the Emperor should retain his throne. In postwar Japan, the everyday life of the imperial family was reported in detail. The marriage in 1959 of Crown Prince Akihito (born 1933) to Michiko Shoda, the daughter of an industrialist, was eagerly accepted by the people.
For a composite United States community, the reasonable requirements in gallons per capita of resident population per day are: residential, 50; commercial, 20; industrial, 50; public, 10; unaccounted for losses, 10, for a total of 140. Domestic water use in 1958 was reported by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) as 50 gallons per capita per day east of the 100th meridian (near the center of North Dakota), and 100 gallons per day west of that longitude. The AWWA also reported the tendency of meter sales to rise with family income. |
