House Of Guise: GUISE, gez, a branch of the ducal house of Lc raine that rose to great prominence in 16th ce tury politics in France. The name is derivi from the town of Guise in northern Franc which was the historical capital of the Thieracl district and is now in the department of Aisn Claude de Lorraine. The founder of the hon of Guise was Claude de Lorraine (1496-1550 second son of Rene II, Duke of Lorraine, I Philippa de Gheldre.
In this new kind of war, the military genius of Francois de Guise did not serve him well. The only great battle of the first religious war, at Dreux in December 1562, was inconclusive. Soon thereafter, as Francois was preparing to lay siege to Orleans and peace negotiations were under way, he was assassinated by a Huguenot fanatic, Jean Poltrot de Mere, in February 1563.
The primary leadership of the house of Guise now fell on the shoulders of the Cardinal of Lorraine. However, Charles was still deeply involved in ecclesiastical affairs.
The war began because Henri III, under le influence of Guise, banned the Protes: mt religion. Navarre won several battles, id when Guise seized Paris, intending to epose the King, Henri III found himself owerless and had to flee to Blois for safety, i desperation, he invited Guise to a con-:rence, and there had him murdered.
