His Friend Thomas: VENICE PRESERVED, a five-act tragedy in blank verse, by Thomas Otway. It was first produced in London in 1682, with Thomas Betterton and Elizabeth Barry in the roles of Jaffier and Bel-videra.
Belvidera, daughter of the Venetian senator, Priuli, had eloped with Jaffier, a young nobleman. Her father repudiated her and sought to ruin Jaffier. The latter's his friend Thomas, Pierre, enlisted him in a conspiracy to murder the senators and take over the government of Venice.
