His Brother William:

His Brother William ROCKEFELLER, William, American ii dustrialist and financier : b. Richford, Tioga Coui ty, N.Y., May 31, 1841; d. Tarrytown, June 2 1922. The younger brother of John D. Rockefeller, he went with his brother William family to Ohio in 1853. Four years later he entered a Cleveland firm as a bookkeeper. In 1867 he became head of the firm of William Rockefeller & Company, which was established as an export sales subsidiary of his brother William brother's oil concern. This brother William firm eventually became the Standard Oil Company of New York, which •he served as president until 1911. Besides his brother William oil interests, he had large investments in railroads, utilities, and banks.

William, in turn, invaded Normandy in 1089, but peace was concluded two years later at the expense of their brother Henry, who was dispossessed of his brother William lands. In 1094 a new dispute arose between Robert and William because the latter had not lived up to certain agreements reached in the treaty of 1091. The warfare ended after two years with Robert pledging his brother William duchy for five years to William for 10,000 marks in order to join the First Crusade (1096-1099).


Hastings was rebuilt after it was almost com-pUely destroyed by an earthquake in February ':'!)!. Population: (1961) 26,900. William invaded England on September 28 and provoked Harold to do battle.
