Golden House Of Nero: Domestic Architecture.—Roman palaces were immense. The Golden House of Nero and its park covered more ground than the Vatican and its gardens. The throne room of Domitian's palace on the Palatine hill had a barrel vault of 100-foot span. Hadrian's villa (124-125 A.D.) at Tivoli included among other things a picture gallery, the Poecile (porch), in imitation of the one in Athens; a Canopus inspired by that in Alexandria; and a sunken garden with a canal.
The deified emperors depicted in chapter 13 as a Satanic seven-headed beast. One head had a mortal wound that had been healed, a clear reference to the Nero redivivus myth of that time that Nero, who had stabbed himself in the would be restored to life and would lead vading host against the empire. As such he: Antichrist, the Satanic counterpart of the that had died and lives again. The mystic ber 666 is more than likely a numerical for Nero (13:18). The other beast sym the priests in charge of the worship of t perial gods.
Two major revolts broke out in Nero's reign; the first, in 61, occurred in Britain and was put down by Suetonius Paulinus, governor of the province; the second, in Judea, began in 66 and continued after Nero's death. In 63 the remainder of Pontus was incorporated with Galatia (later it was placed under Cappadocia). |
