Games When Playing: During these years playing ball takes precedence over games when playing of chase and playing with toys. Imaginative play decreases during this age period. For girls there is a rapid decline in doll-play toward the end of this period. Boys would probably show a similar decline in their interest in playing space cadets, pilots, G-men, and cowboys. At thirteen or fourteen there is a marked falling off of interest in childhood games when playing. No abrupt cessation of any specific play activity, however, occurs for all children at any age level. Changes in play interests are gradual. Differences in play activities between age groups are smaller than those among children of the same age; play interests overlap from age to age.
In the way of practical help, suggest games when playing that could be played at home (e.g. word bingo or a cloze game where children fill in missing words or phrases), explaining the particular value of games when playing to a child with reading problems -namely that they're fun and so don't seem too much like hard work, and also that they have a useful repetitive, reinforcing function. When you recommend a game, try to explain just how it is designed to help. There are booklets and pamphlets available, which give ideas for games when playing that can easily be made and played at home (e.g. Hip Pocket Spelling games when playing series, New York, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1983).
REBEC, or REBECK, a stringed musical instrument of the violin kind, said to have been introduced by the Moors into Spain. It soon became popular all over the Continent, being the favorite instrument of minstrels and of village musicians, and up till the end of the 17th century playing the same important part at fairs, rustic games when playing and weddings as does the violin at the present day. |
