Furniture And Family Figures:

Furniture And Family Figures Human figures in bronze served as handles for other implements or utensils, and, with animal figures, as the handles for bronze vases. Large bronze mixing bowls of the archaic period were sometimes decorated with friezes of relief figures. Later Mirror backs occasionally carried incised scenes, related in style to Vase paintings, or figures in relief. Other bronze objects that sometimes attracted the finest artists were helmets (notably the cheek pieces) and plaques fitted to furniture. The bronze was hammered, and traced or incised.

When preadolescents were given different types of play materials and told to construct an imaginary scene, boys used more blocks and vehicles; girls more furniture and family figures (69, 1951). Boys usually build outdoor scenes and girls house interiors (39, 1951). During adolescence boys and girls are in closer agreement as to preferred forms of of their dependence on their parents, they may become too subservient to their peer group—in a world apart.

In his picture of the acrobats' family Picasso again approaches the classical ideal of beauty. The elongated figures have disappeared, their gestures have lost all pathetic mannerism, and, like all the figures in his pictures from now on, they are standing with their feet conspicuously apart and pointing in different directions. At that time Picasso used to pay frequent visits to the exhibition rooms of the Louvre which contained Greek and Roman sculptures.
