Fern Family: My final choice for the fern garden is the florist's fern (Dryopteris spinulosa), known also as spinulose woodfern. When approaching a grove of these plants in the woods you see a fern that typifies ferns. And when buying flowers from a florist, this fern usually supplies the leaves in the arrangement. The florist's fern needs light shade and must be well-watered to prevent burning of the fronds. Plants erow about 30 inches tall and form crowns.
GOLD FERN, any of several popular ornamental ferns named for the yellow or white powder found on the undersides of the fronds (leaves). Gold ferns belong to the genus Pityrogramma of the common fern family (Polypodiaceae). They are mostly native to tropical America and Africa, where they are grown as garden plants. In temperate climates they are raised as conservatory or houseplants.
Gold-dust trees can tolerate a smoky atmosphere, but they are not reliably hardy in the United States north of Washington, D. C. They are often grown in pots or Tubs on porches or patios during the summer. JAMES A. YOUNG, U. S. Department of Agriculture
