Lanai, Kahoo/awe, and Molokoi. Lanai, sixth-largest of the islands and a subdivision of Maui county, is rarely visited by tourists. It is a pineapple plantation island owned entirely by the Dole Corporation. Island headquarters are in the quiet village of Lanai City. The small island of Kahoolawe, to the southeast, is uninhabited.
Molokai, unlike Lanai, attracts many visitors. The northern coast of this, the fifth-largest island, rises in a series of steep cliffs (called a pali) and features spectacular, high waterfalls. At Kalaupapa, a peninsula accessible only by sea or air or by foot-trail, the Belgian priest Father.
Damien (q.v.) ministered to the lepers from 1873 to 1889, and the refuge still harbors a few victims of the affliction (now called Hansen's disease). Most of Molokai is governed as a part of the county of Maui.
Oahu. The third-largest island, Oahu, is the seat of the state government and the home of at least four fifths of the state's residents. |
