Family Of Styles: Modern Styles. Until the early 19th century, Europe had venerated only antique styles, but romanticism extended public interest to medieval and Renaissance styles as well. Although, in a purist spirit, 19th century designers sometimes attempted to re-create past styles authentically, they more often practiced eclecticism. They also had to compromise in their designs for an industrialized art as the processes of production became mechanized.
Carrere & Hastings helped promote the revival of Renaissance styles that Charles F. McKim and others had started in the late 1870's. The work of the firm was frequently French Renaissance, but Hastings expanded his architectural vocabulary after 1911 to include classical styles.
