Family Alcidae: Guillemots come to land only to breed. They establish huge breeding colonies on the rocky ledges of seaside cliffs. One or two conical eggs are laid. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the young. When two or three weeks old, the young, still unable to fly, plunge into the sea and begin to catch fish and invertebrates.Guillemots are classified in the genera Uria and Cepphus of the auk family, Alcidae, of the order Charadriiformes.
RAZOR-BILLED AUK or RAZORBILL,a seabird (Alca torda) of the family Alcidae which includes the murres and puffins. The razorbill is restricted to the North Atlantic and nearby water of the Arctic Sea as far north as Spitzbergen. It breeds on the coasts of America south to Maine, and on those of western Greenland, Iceland, and of the Kola and Scandinavian peninsulas south to the British Isles and Brittany in France.
