Experimental Medicine:

Experimental Medicine The revolutionary advances of the past two centuries warrant the conviction that almost any problem can be solved if it is properly formulated and its solutions diligently pursued. As a student of experimental medicine, I take it for granted that progress can be made in the control of any disease to which we address ourselves with enough energy. I feel confident, also, that physicists, chemists, and engineers can provide us with almost any kind of earthly good. From penicillin to the control of personality, from supersonic flight to space exploration, the 20th century has been marked by achievements so startling that they dwarf the miracles of the legendary ages past.

He was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society, London, in 1896; the Barnard Medal of Columbia University in 1900; and the Nobel Prizs in physics in 1901. From 1899 he was professor of experimental physics at Munich. He wrote Annalen der Physik und Chemic, embodying the results of numerous experimental labors.

Human Renewal. A major problem is the necessity of moving families and businesses from areas being renewed to other permanent or temporary locations. Relocation of low-income families disrupts their already precarious lives, but it may provide an opportunity for their social and economic improvement. Plans to achieve this improvement are being joined to planning for physical renewal. Experimental programs of this kind were initiated in New Haven, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Oakland, Calif., in the 1950's. These experimental programs led to the "poverty programs" of the early 1960's, which emphasized community action and various experimental programs in education, health, welfare, employment, and vocational guidance: in effect, human renewal.
