Expanded Education Programs:

Expanded Education Programs About 70 colleges and universities offer programs to train health education teachers, and the profession is growing. Members of the profession feel strongly that health education should not be considered a part of physical education and that physical education should not be a branch of health education. Some high schools now give a half year to physical education and a half year to health instruction.

A health manpower report prepared by the National Commission of Community Health Services showed that the U.S. hospitals and health organizations were maintaining the ratio of 150 doctors per 100,000 population only by filling out one-fifth of their needs with physicians from other countries. The demand for health care had also created serious shortages of nurses and other paramedical personnel. Among the solutions being suggested were new methods of health care organization and government support for new or expanded education programs in the health sciences.

The education systems in Sparta, and particularly in Athens, fostered the development of responsible citizens and laid the foundations for modern educational practices. Service to the state was a prominent aspect of life under the emperors of ancient Rome, and this aspect of Roman education was adopted in many areas as the Roman Empire expanded.
