Encouraging The Growth Of Long: Lateral growth in trees frequently begins later than growth in height, but the period of lateral growth is longer. Rates of lateral growth likewise are low at the outset, increasing after a few weeks and then diminishing. In view of the long annual period of lateral growth in trees, deleterious environmental conditions may exercise a pronounced effect on growth. In the wood of trees of temperate regions, narrow and wide growth rings may be observed, marking years characterized by unfavorable and favorable conditions for growth.
Trees in towns and cities often become too large for the area in which they were planted. Also, where roads are widened, overhanging branches may obstruct traffic. If this happens, branches are often cut back to the trunk, encouraging the growth of long stems that cluster around the top of the trunk. The need for pollarding can be avoided by selecting trees that will not intrude on neighboring buildings, roads or gardens. Always select a species and variety to suit the position.
This mass of bacteria would weigh only about 1 pound. However, if the growth of this population were to continue for another day, the mass of bacteria would weigh a trillion tons. Fortunately the growth period is limited and is not allowed to continue this long. However, it is easy to see, given this enormously high growth rate, why diseases like pneumonia caused by the growth of a bacterium inside an animal host can develop and become critical in a matter of hours or days. |
