Diet Of Baby Birds: The baby's diet should be adequate in every respect to build positive health and to prevent flabby muscles, weak bones, poor teeth, and rickets. The physician will prescribe the diet that seems best for a particular baby. He will supervise the gradual introduction of solid foods. He will avoid fads.
Nestling food, essential in the diet of baby birds and breeding parent birds, may be purchased at all pet shops under the commercial name of "nestling food." It consists of meal worms, ant eggs, wasp grubs, blight beetles, caterpillars, spiders, and flies, which have been dried, ground, and thoroughly mixed. It is not always possible to make this mixture at home because of the difficulty of obtaining the various ingredients.
In the wild, adult squirrel feeds on plant life, insects, small birds, frogs, garden crops, seeds, grains, plant buds, birds' eggs, and baby mice; needs similarly balanced diet in captivity in order to remain healthy.
REQUIRES DAILY: Seeds—Use prepared hamster mix, which can be bought in pet stores. Fruits—Offer berries, cherries, grapes, melons in season; apples and oranges in winter. |
