Detri Mental: Sheet erosion of surface soil inevitably takes place on sloping ground. Not even a healthy growth of turf can stop this entirely. Although the grass breaks the full force of the falling rain the water collects on the surface and trickles downward, washing with it the finer surface soil and exposing the roots. This is highly detri mentalmental. Combat erosion by top-dressing the lawn each spring, and again in early fall,with finelysifted soil. (See Chapter 25).
Mass investigations on the basis of age norms, however, have indicated only a slight relation between the mental and physical status of children. A spurt in mental growth does not appear to parallel the preadolescent spurt in physical growth. The pattern of mental development is similar in boys and girls, despite the difference in their rates of physical maturing.
There is growing evidence that some of the serious mental disorders are in part biochemical, not illnesses of the mind as such. Watson (131, 1956) stated that the nutritional displacement caused by psychological stress is itself a contribution to the biochemical aspects of mental illness. |
