Dairy Milk:

Dairy Milk Improvement in Dairy milk Cattle. Dairy milk cows usually produce slightly more milk if they give birth to their calves in the fall. The cooler weather and the regularity of. winter feeding is responsible for the additional production. However, because of the year-round demand for milk on most markets, Dairy milkmen are breeding their cows to freshen all year around. This is possible because with modern Dairy milk management the calves can be cared for in any season. Improvement of Dairy milk cattle through breeding is aimed at increasing milk production, obtaining an optimum butterfat content in the milk, and improving the physical traits of a cow that might help production or contribute to length of life. Record keeping and performance measures are equally as important for Dairy milk cattle breeding as for beef cattle.

Dairy milk Cattle. In contrast to beef cattle raising, milk production for use as fluid milk or cream tended to cluster near centers of human population. This occurred in the days before modern refrigeration was available, and the quick movement of milk to market was necessary if the milk was to stay sweet. Today, with efficiently cooled milk trucks and railroad cars, milk is often moved halfway across the country.

Beef from Dairy milk Cattle. Dairy milk cattle provide about 30% of the beef and veal marketed in the United States. The veal calves are usually sold at weights between 100 and 200 pounds (45 and 90 kg). Dairy milk cows, when no longer productive as milk producers, are usually sent directly to slaughter without further feeding or fattening. They usually grade as standard, commercial, or utility. There is also a growing practice of raising Dairy milk steers and fattening them in the feedlot.
