Computer Techniques: Potential applications of the computer techniques made possible by microelectronics include a small computer techniques in every home or a pocket computer techniques terminal that can be connected to a powerful central computer techniques via the telephone. Such devices may be used to solve our numerical problems (e.g., income tax, or our bank balance) or as a creative tool to relate our knowledge and experiences to our future actions.
Research associated with defense and Security also has contributed; the goal of detecting remote nuclear explosions has required the development of new seismic techniques, techniques that are equally applicable to study of the earth's interior, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.
Combined with the recent surge in computer techniques technology and the development of lasers, the availability of these satellite and seismic data has led to a far more comprehensive view of the earth, its atmosphere, and its oceans.
Scanning techniques were also applied to light microscopy, permitting three-dimensional photomicrographs of extraordinary clarity and depth of focus. If these techniques could be combined with those used to view living cells during mitosis (cell division), CHLOE ef a/, might help to clarify the biophysics of cell division, a field long shrouded in fog for lack of sufficiently clear and rapid measurements. Because some of the critical phases of mitosis may last only a few seconds, the swift perceptivity of the modern computer techniques would be a welcome addition to microscopy. |
