Catholic Brother:

Catholic Brother Popish Plot. The plot—an alleged conspirao of Catholics to assassinate Charles II and plact his Catholic brother on the throne—was a figment of the imagination of Titus Dates (q.v.) and « other unsavory perjurers. It succeeded politically I in raising an anti-Catholic storm because it came ' near enough to the truth. There was a Catholi-. conspiracy at court. In fact, Charles himself (whu eventually died a Catholic) had engaged in ase- | cret conspiracy with Louis XIV. James would f certainly pursue the restoration of Catholicim more stubbornly and ruthlessly.

Yet another brother, Charles (1554-1611 Duke de Mayenne, kept alive the Guise fami ambitions and the cause of Roman Catholic € tremism. He kept the armies of the League the field until 1595, trying desperately to find Catholic substitute for Henry of Navarre, w! in 1589 had become the legitimate king of Fran as Henry IV. However, Henry IV's conversion Catholicism in 1593 undercut the ideologic reason for the League's revolt, and its forces b gan to crumble.

Educational and Religious Facilities.—In addition to the public school system and Catholic parochial schools, the educational institutions in the city include the Allison-James School (Presbyterian, for Spanish-speaking youth), St. Michael's College (Catholic, for men), the Seminary of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Catholic, preparatory), the New Mexico School for the Deaf, a United States Indian school, and the Hill and Canyon School of the Arts.
