Career Trends In Child Development: Influence of parents. Of all the human relations influencing a child's development, the personality of the mother is of central importance (84, 1957). Her attitudes toward pregnancy, toward her husband and other members of the family, toward her career trends in child development and social life, toward her role as a mother, and, most of all, her attitude toward the child and his need for understanding, affection, acceptance, approval, and control, are vital.
During the first two years of life the child lays the foundation for his future. Although change is possible at any age, early trends and patterns tend to persist. Competent students of child psychology were able to match personality sketches of fifteen children written before they were two years old with sketches of the same children written after fifteen years (70, 1948). There is an element of psychological predestination in the past. New patterns of action evolve out of previous structure and behavior, and in response to new patterns of relationship. Beginning with his present level each child needs to pass gradually through a sequence of development during his" first two years.
The level of the child's neurological and physiological development determines the kinds of learning that can take place. Accordingly, the age at which a particular task should be taught to a child depends on the complexity of the skill, the degree of co-ordination and mental ability involved, and the rate of that particular child's development. A little practice at the appropriate stage of maturation is more effective than a lot when the child is too young. |
