Called Hair Cracks: There was good reason for this official neglect. Black-powder rockets, the only type then in existence, suffered from two inherent drawbacks. They had to he made by hand as piecework and so could not he mass produced, and they were unsafe. The black-powder charge, because of the need for high compression when charging the rocket, grew brittle. If the rockets were accidentally dropped or suffered a sudden change in temperature, fine cracks, called hair cracks, developed in the charge. Although these could not be detected from the outside by any means, they invariably led to explosions. Solid-fuel rockets did not become fit for operational front-line use until both these problems had been solved.
