American Family Prominent: GRIMKE, grim'ke, an American family prominent in public affairs. Best known are the Grimke sisters, who were abolitionists and feminists.JOHN FAUCHERAUD GHIMKE (1752-1819), a lawyer and judge, was born in Charleston, S. C. He studied law in London, but opposed British colonial policies and served in the Bevolutionary War. Later he attained high magisterial and legislative posts. His published writings included Public Law of South Carolina (1790).
RIDGE, rij, John, Cherokee Indian leader: b. northern Georgia, 1803; d. June 22, 1839. His early education was begun in the schools conducted among the Cherokee people by the Moravian missionaries. In 1818, at the instance of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, he was selected with two other Cherokee youths to attend school at Cornwall, Conn. While there, he became acquainted with Sarah B. Northrop, a member of a prominent local family, whom he afterward married.
The tradition of the Bach family was t ried on by four of Johann Sebastian's sons ; one grandson. Wilhelm Friedemann (the Hal Bach (1710-1784) was considered the best ganist of his time. Johann Christoph Fried: (the Biickeburg) Bach (1732-1795) wrote n cellaneous music, including a cantata, Die Am ikanerin (The American Woman), inspired the Declaration of Independence. Karl Phil Emanuel (the Berlin or Hamburg) Bach (17 1788), and Johann Christian (the Milan London) Bach (1735-1782) rate among the m prominent musicians of the preclassical era. |
