A Small Amusement: For evening entertainment not involving eating, you may wish to visit Tivoli, a small amusement park near the airport, or to patronize Reykjavik's movie houses, whose films nearly always speak English. Two of the largest and most central cinemas are Gamla Bid and Nijja Bid.
Commercial recreation, largely a product of the 20th century, embraces several industries with large investments in the centers maintained. Motion picture theaters, amusement parks, roller skating rinks, and bowling alleys were established in even small cities or towns or in rural locations near heavily traveled highways.
Most recreation centers have come to serve persons of all ages, and activities for adults and even the aged have become common. Priority usually is given, however, to the requirements of children and youth, and a large part of the recreational services of the country was established in recognition of their needs.
Copenhagen is rich in things to see. Tivoli Gardens, always eagerly sought by visitors, is quite in a class by itself among the open-air amusement parks of the world, but this will be discussed later under the heading of evening and night life. From the city's numerous cultural sights I will try to make some considered selections. |
